The demotion grew out of an AJC investigation. In July of 2010, the AJC's Tim Eberly reported:
"District spokesman Quinn Hudson said Simpson turned his career around, rising to become principal at Towers High. Simpson improved test scores there, Quinn said, adding that when the graduation rate for last year is tallied for the school, The district expects about a 16 percentage point increase."

Dr. Ralph L. Simpson, an Atlanta native, launched his career within the penal system after receiving a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of West Georgia. After working in a maximum-security prison, he made a defining decision to be a proactive solution to staggering incarceration rates. Henceforth, he earned his teacher's certification, master's, specialist, and doctorate. During the following two decades, he courageously empowered the whole child, while molding 21st century leaders. His mantra became, "I went from the back door of the jailhouse to the front door of the schoolhouse."
